HENRY A. SCHLEIER FAMILY
Henry A Schleier was born in Cassville, Wisconsin in 1878. He was the son of Michael and Kathryn Koll Schleier, both of whom were born in Prussia and immigrated to the United States in 1857. Michael and Kate Schleier moved to Iowa in the 1880's to farm and raise their family. They had nine children: Barbara, Mary, Anna, Matthew, John, Christian, Herman, Frank and Henry. Barbara married Richard Kirschbaum. Mary married Peter Kohnen. Anna married Henry Abts. Matthew married Katherine Gross. John married Frances Schmidt. Christian married Theresia Loeltz. He was a barber in Earling for a number of years. Herman was a priest. Frank was a physician and married Ella Menogne. Katherine Weiland Schleier was born in 1880 in Harlan, Iowa. She was the daughter of John B. Weiland and Mary Nepper Weiland. John B. was born in Belgium and at the age of nineteen came to this country. Mary Nepper was born in Ohio. John and Mary Weiland moved to Iowa and lived in Westphalia, Harlan and finally Earling. While in Harlan they operated a saloon for twelve years before returning to farming. They were the parents of five children: John, a school teacher; Mary the wife of John Langenfeld; Jacob, who married Kate Kuhl; and Chris, who married Mary Kuhl. Henry Schleier grew up and was educated in Earling. After attending college at St. Benedicts, Atchison, Kansas, he graduated from Highland Park College at Des Moines, Iowa, with a degree in Pharmacy. After working in Des Moines for several months, he purchased a drug store in Earling. In 1904, Henry and Katherine were married. To them were born: Geralda Marie, who married Theodore Ahart; John Gerald, who married Frances Downey; Cleopha, who married James Bates, a dentist; Gregory, who married Marge Hannan and later changed his name to Paul Dixon for a television career; Ivo John, who married Helen Peterson and later Velma Slofkosky; Rose Agnes Katheryn (Kay), married Patrick Peterson, a veterinarian. During the early history of Earling this Schleier family played a major role. Henry's drug store was the center of the town's activities. Henry was well known for two things: as a public speaker and as a baseball pitcher. The Fourth of July was celebrated by one town or another every year and Henry was much in demand as a "Speaker of the Day." He was considered the greatest pitcher in his area. As times changed and the automobile came into existence, people started traveling more. Henry's business declined and he and his family purchased a pharmacy in Albia, Iowa in 1930. Henry passed away in 1933, and Katie in 1961.
