Andrew L. McDaniel of Charleston passed away Saturday morning, Oct. 2, at Hubbard Hospice House.

He was born in Charleston, one of 10 children. He started working at a young age as a paper carrier for The Charleston Gazette. Later, he was a motor route deliverer. He then became a printers apprentice for The Gazette before joining the U.S. Army. He served in the Korean War, where he was a mechanic. Upon returning from the war, he married his sweetheart and started working for S. Spencer Moore as a shipping clerk/deliverer. He worked there until 1965, when he joined the United States Postal Service. He retired from the Post Office in 1996 after 30 years of service.

Andy was always busy after work and on his days off. He would do roofing or other carpentry jobs or he would be mowing the grass. He always had one or two projects going.

His pastimes included hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed his trips to Dale Hollow Lake with his sons, brothers and nephews. Occasionally the women were allowed to go.

He was a graduate of the American High School and attended South Ruffner Church. He was always there to lend a hand, fix an appliance or give love and support.

Andrew is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Frances Rose McDaniel; daughters, Kristina Abdalla and Karen Berg both of Charleston, and Kati Jennings of Texas; sons, Andrew (Carol) of Dunbar and Bruce (Brandi), Stanford (Melissa) and Russsell (Sasha), all of South Charleston; 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and his great-aunt, Marjorie Burford.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Cecil Andrew and Georgie Marvin McDaniel; brothers, Peyton, Ernest, Marvin and James McDaniel; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at South Ruffner Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Harold Landers officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery with military rites.

Friends will be received at Wilson funeral Home, Charleston, Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m.

It is asked that memorials be given to South Ruffner Presbyterian Church or the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association Animal Shelter.
