Jay P. Stokes, a long-time resident of Blair and Washington County, died at his home in north Blair last Sunday, December 14th. The Stokes home was at 672 North 16th Street.
Mr. Stokes was born at Avoca, Iowa, September 18, 1883. He came to Washington County and the Herman area as a young man. He farmed for a number of years near Herman but moved to Blair upon retiring from farming. For a time he served on the Blair police force, but most of his years in Blair were spent in semi-retirement.
Mrs. Stokes died Nov. 18, 1968. He is survived by four daughters and five sons.
The daughters are: Mrs. Albert Petersen (Laura) of Herman; Mrs. Velmar Katt (Marjorie) of Arlington; Mrs. Ray Rolfs (Luella), Valley, Nebr.; Mrs. Harlan Wulf (Mardelle) of Blair.
The sons are Jay, Jr, and Lester Stokes, both of Omaha; James and Earl Stokes, both of Blair; and Shirley Stokes of Tucson, Arizona. A brother, Edgar Polin, resides in Englewood, Colorado.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Atherton conducting the service. Burial, under the direction of the Bendorf Funeral Home, was made in the Herman Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mitchell Rahlfs, Darrel Katt, Clifford Petersen, Ronald Livermore, D. Jack Standen and Richard Dalton.
