Mary Helen McDonald Bunten died on Thursday, May 20, 2004, at the age of 89 years. She was born in Glen Rose, Texas, on May 5, 1915, to Robert Eli McDonald and Jewel Embree McDonald. She attended The University of Texas earning a degree in Botany. Mary was in the teaching profession. World War II began. Mary Helen went north to work in the war plants using her science training. Mary Helen married Robert Bunten and they had three children. Mary Helen came from a family that valued history, family and nature. She followed in her parents footsteps and worked hard to preserve the family acreage in the hill country near Austin. Her goal was achieved when the land was added to the habitat for the Golden Cheeked Warbler as part of the Birds of the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge near Lake Travis. She never stopped learning. That was an inspiration for all who knew her. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 25,2004, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Interment followed at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
