Junction-Minnie Elizabeth (JACOBY) Walker, former Menard County Commissioner, Precinct 4, died Friday, June 2, 2006, at age 97 in Bristow Memorial Hospital in Bristow, Okla. Graham Funeral Home in Junction is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, June 5. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, at First Methodist Church in London, Texas, with the Rev. Scott Bradford officiating. Junction Order of the Eastern Star will conduct graveside service at Little Saline Cemetery.
Born Jan. 7, 1909, to Hans and Alice Cavness Jacoby, Minnie married John William Walker on Nov. 25, 1932. They resided in Kimble County for a brief time and then moved near Hext in Menard County. In 1947, they purchased property in Menard County near London. After her husband's death in 1970, Minnie continued to live on their property until November 2004, when she went to Bristow, Okla., to live with her granddaughter, Charlsie Hummel and husband Dee.
An independent and astute businesswoman, Minnie managed her sheep and cattle on three separate properties from the time of her husband's death until the past few years, when her great-grandson Kenneth Burton began assisting her. In fact, she managed all of her business until Mother's Day, when she fell and broke her hip and had to have surgery.
Active in community affairs, she wrote the history of the Little Saline community for a grant application for monies to improve the schoolhouse/community center. For many years, she served as an election clerk at the Little Saline Schoolhouse.
The Order of the Eatern Star was a major part of Minnie's life. Initiated into the Hext Chapter, she later moved her membership to London and served as Worthy Matron several times. She also served as Worthy Matron of Menard Chapter and held dual as well as lifetime memberships in Junction and Fort McKavett Chapters. For many years, she also attended Grand Chapter of OES as well as Schools of Instruction for certificate valadation and often visited and assisted other chapters. In 1971, her son took her to visiit the International Eastern Star Temple and the offices of the General Grand Chapter in Washington D.C.
Additionally, she was an active member of the SPC club for many years. An active member of the London Methodist Church, she and several family members attended Easter services there in April. Minnie loved to return home and cook for her family. In fact, she prepared most of the Thanksgiving dinner this past year and cooked a pineapple upside-down cake for her grandson-in-law, Dean, during an Easter visit at London. Exstremely devoted to her family, she kept a scrapbook of their activities. She was also an avid reader, an excellent seamstress and an authority on family and local history. She also loved to crochet. Minnie was preceeded in death by her husband, John; and her only child, Charles William "Cracker" Walker; her granddaughter, Sherry Kay Rountree; her daughter-in-law, Betty Jean Myrick Walker, her brother Jess Jacoby; and her sister, Myrtle Lawson.
Surviving granddaughters are Charlsie Hummel and husband Dee of Bristow, Okla., and Deborah Horton and husband Dean of Paige, Texas. Also surviving are her grandson, Charles William "Bubba" Walker Jr. and wife Dianna of New Braunfels; as well as great-grandsons Kenneth Burton and wife Samantha of Mason, and Chad Horton and wife Dusty of Paige. Great-granddaughters include Jennifer Isaacs and husband Greg of Bristow, Okla., Holly Horton of Paige, Telisha Roundtree Pickett of Austin, Amanda Walker Loera and husband Daniel, and Melissa Walker of New Braunfels. Great-great-grandchildren are Jeffrey and Haylee Burton, Autumn Horton, Grayson, Kaylee and Tyler Loera, and Sebastian and Ahren Pickett. Nieces include Marjorie Lawson O'Kelley and husband Charlie of Amarillo, and Mary Ellen Walker Thornton and husband Dr. Frank of Trinity; nephews Don Lawson and wife Bennie of Odessa, George Walker and wife Pam of Colorado City, Dr. John Walker and wife Regina of Houston, and Jack Delton Ryan and wife Sonia of Prescott Valley, Ariz.
