November 28, 1924 to May 24, 2006 Tommy was born in Kennewick, WA, to Merrill "Bob" and Ruth Simmelink. She spent her early years on the family Horse Heaven wheat ranch attending Locust Grove one-room school. She loved riding horseback and became the 1940 Kennewick Rodeo Queen as well as a hard-working ranch girl. The family moved into town where she was a second generation graduate of Kennewick High in 1941 achieving top in her class. She graduated from Washington State College and moved to Coeur d'Alene, ID, to work as home economics instructor for Washington Water Power. She married her co-worker, Robert B. McFarland in 1948. Tommy volunteered at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Blueburds, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and 4-H, PTA, Catholic Daughters, Altar society and Bible Study groups, PEO, and golfing groups, 3C's Cancer Society and United Way. After being a full time mother, she was employed as a Home Economics teacher at IHM School and later at North Idaho College. Her most intensive and lasting work outside the home was as Executive Director for United Way of Kootenai County. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, R.M. "Cork" Simmelink. She is survived by her daughters, Jane Peterson of Bayview and Mary Lewis (Doug) of Montesano, WA, and her son, Dr. Robert M. McFarland of Coeur d'Alene, five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Kennewick kin, Leona Mackenstadt (Howard) sister, and sister-in-law Audrey Simmelink, and about 100 cousins living in the Tri-City area. Memorials may be made to Cork's Place in care of Tri-City Chaplaincy, 2108 W. Entiat, Kennewick, or East Benton County Historical Society, P.O. Box 6964, Kennewick, WA.
