Lonnie Bert Rutherford
SAN ANTONIO — Lonnie Bert Rutherford, 84, of Ingram, Texas, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2007, at the VA Hospital in San Antonio.

He was raised in Thorndale, and lived in Austin after World War II until he moved to Kerrville/Ingram in 1987. He was born Aug. 9, 1922, at his home in Thorndale, Texas, to David Cantrell and Sara Anne Penney Rutherford.

Lonnie enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1942. He served in the European Campaign with the 28th Infantry Division for the Liberation of Paris, France. He received the Purple Heart Medal of Honor for wounds he received during battle in Germany. He was MIA/POW for approximately six months until he was rescued in 1945. He was very active in American Legions, VFW and DAV, where he served several terms as Commander in both Austin and Kerrville.
Lonnie retired after 32 years of dedicated service working in the Chemistry Department at the University of Texas at Austin.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Freda Marie Hughes Rutherford; son Burt Hughes; granddaughter, Athena Siders; his 10 brothers and sisters; and his parents.

Lonnie is survived by his daughters, Jisele Tuuri and husband, Ken, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Pamela Hughes of Ingram; sons, Mikelon (Mike) Phil Rutherford and wife, Peggy Sue, of Hutto, Ray Hughes and wife, Viki, of Odessa, and Jeff Hughes and wife, Teri, of Nogle, N.M.; grandchildren, Mikelon Joshua and Nicole Rutherford of Cedar Park, Elishia Siders of Denton, Jennifer Sue and Andrew De Thuin of State College, Pa., Krissa and Neal Zelley of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Shanna and Brandon Adams of Odessa, Beau and P.J. Hughes, Courtney Hughes, Jamie Hughes, Heather Hughes, Stacy Hughes and Sheilah Hughes, all of Odessa, and DeeAnna Sue Rutherford of Hutto; and great-grandchildren, Janie and Trent Winningham of Irving, Seraphina Rutherford of Cedar Park, Tyler and Avery Adams and Trey and Logan Hughes of Odessa. More than anything, Lonnie loved his dog, April, whom we teased was like a daughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2007, at Grimes Funeral Chapels, officiated by Pastor David C. Chancellor. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 4, 2007, at Grimes Funeral Chapels.

The family wishes to thank his many friends for their thoughts and prayers and the VA for their care over the years. We especially are indebted to Pam Hughes for caring so lovingly for Lonnie in his last years.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
