Haywood Akard was born April 21, 1875 in Delta County, Texas, son of Henry Akard (1845-1916) and Mary Callie Terrell (1857-1909.

The 1880 Federal Census for Precinct 5, Texas (Delta County) shows Alfred H. Akard, age 5, born in Texas; living with his father, Henry Akard, a grocer, age 34, born in Virginia; and his mother, Mary C., age 23, born in Texas. Also living in the household were Haywood's siblings: Mary E. Akard, age 3; and Opal Akard, age 5 month; both born in Texas. In addition, a cousin, Catherine Ripley, age 24, born in Texas, was living with the family.

Haywood married Mary Lou Helms, who was born in 1873 in Delta County, Texas, daughter of William Thomas Helm (1848-1929) and Nancy Jane McGuyer (1853- 1926).

The World War I Draft Registration Cards show that Alfred Haywood Akard registered for the draft in Antlers, Oklahoma (Pushmataha County) on September 12, 1918. He gave his full name; his age as 43; his birthdate as April 21, 1875; his current address as Antlers; his occupation as a farmer; and his nearly relative as Mrs. M. L. (Mary Lou) Akard of Antlers, Oklahoma.

The 1930 Federal Census for Kosoma, Oklahoma (Pushmataha County) shows Alfred H. Akard, president of a lumber company, age 54, born in Texas; and his wife, Mary L., age 56, born in Texas. Living with them were three children: William T. Akard, truck driver for a lumber mill, age 21, born in Oklahoma; Jack M. Akard, age 15, born in Oklahoma; and Ray H. Akard, store salesman, age 29, born in Texas.

The Texas Death Index, 1903-2000 as well as Haywood's death certificate shows that A. H. Akard died January 25, 1942 in Lamar County, Texas. His death certificate shows that A. H. Akard died January 25, 1942 in Paris, Texas (Lamar County) and it shows that he was born April 21, 1872 in Delta County, Texas.

Haywood was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Antlers, Oklahoma (Pushmataha County). Mary Lou died in 1943 and was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery beside her husband.
