Sarah Elizabeth Kern, 97, of Mt. Lake Park passed away at her home on Wednesday, May 30, 2012. Born on November 15, 1914 in Gainesboro, VA, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Lucy (Brown) Fout. She was also preceded in death by her husband of sixty-seven years, Charles Edward Kern, Sr.; brothers, Frank L. Fout, Belmont Fout, Jack Fout, Vance Fout; and sisters, Margaret McIlwee Smith, Evelyn Godlove, Caroline Secrist, Jane Delaney, and Frances Fout. She was the last remaining member of her immediate family. Sarah is survived by one son, Charles E. Kern, Jr. (Pat) and wife Heidi of Oakland, two daughters, Ann Kern Whitacre of Winchester, VA, and Deborah Hinkle and husband Roy of Mt. Lake Park; a granddaughter, Mary Beth DeMartino and husband Ty of Frostburg; grandson, Rob Johnson of Canonsburg, PA; great grandchildren, Holden and Sam DeMartino and Jacob Johnson; dearest friend, Aleta Friend; and caregiver, Charlene Copeland. She was the oldest member of Gainesboro Methodist Church in Gainesboro, VA and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Moorefield, WV. Sarah worked at the National Fruit as an apple peeler in Winchester, VA and F.C. Cook and Co. as a payroll clerk in Buckhannon, WV. Sarah was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was interested in the Civil War, politics, and was an avid reader.
A funeral service will be conducted at Omps Funeral Home in Winchester, VA on Saturday, June 2 at 11 AM with Rev. Bill Withers and Rev. George Fletcher officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Gainesboro Cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Garrett County, Inc., PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550 or to the Gainesboro United Methodist Church (Cemetery Fund), c/o Doug and Mary Cooper, 201 Chestnut Grove Road, Winchester, VA 22603.
