She was born Sallie Jane Mooney in Virginia in 1871. Her marriage to Mr Converse took place in Knoxville in 1907. Soon after, they moved to Cumberland County where he had charge of the earliest agricultural experimental plots here under the direction of the University of Tennessee. After several years here in town, in 1915 they moved to a farm about 2 1/2 miles out of Pomona which they called "Long Meadow". This name was chosen for the boyhood home of Father Converse in Long Meadow, Mass back in 1860.
Among her ancestors is Hezekiah Balch, who was associated with Samuel Doak in establishing the first college in east Tennessee.
Hers was a life of service, caring for her sisters and brothers while her mother was ill, while she was yet in her early teens; serving her own family and her church with such loyalty as is seldom seen. She taught Sunday school for 37 years.
