He enlisted for 1 year May 30, 1861 at Corinth, MS and became a private in Company A, 17th regiment of the Mississippi Volunteers. He re-enlisted August 23, 1862 in the Company A, Buena Vista Rifles, 17th Regiment Mississippi Infantry for 3 years or until the war was over. He spent the last 2 years as a POW at Rock Island, IL
