NOKOMIS DRIVER KILLED INSTANTLY
Leo Eugene Piper, 46, of Nokomis was killed instantly at 5 a.m. yesterday when the car he was driving and a dump truck driven by Sherman Nischan, 421 1/2 East Jefferson street, collided on Route 66 one mile south of Williamsville.
Piper suffered a skull fracture and his left arm was severed in the crash. Nischan was not injured. Coroner W. L. Dragoo quoted Nischan as saying the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions and that when Piper's car approached within a few yards of the truck the car suddenly swerved across the slab, striking the truck just behind the cab. Dragoo said the man's arm apparently had been resting on the car window, causing it to be severed by the impact.
State Police Lt. John Stuper and Officer Frank Metzger said Nischan's truck was only slightly damaged. Piper's car was demolished.
The body of the victim was removed to the Bisch Memorial home and was taken to Nokomis for funeral services and burial.
