Albert Bartel Dies as Leaves Hospital Door

Sudden Relapse When Seemed to Be Recovering is Fatal
Yorktown, (Special) - The community was shocked again by the death of one of the well known citizens, Albert Bartels, 27 years old, who passed away very suddenly at the Hand hospital in Shenandoah Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Bartel had undergone an appendix operation ten days ago and was thought to have made a complete recovery. He was just starting home when he complained of not feeling so well. Before he could be taken to his room again he passed away, death caused by a blood clot.
The body was taken to the home of his father, Wm. Bartel, in Clarinda. The funeral services were held at the North church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
He leaves his wife and two small children, besides his parents, the brother Herman of Greeley, Colo., Walter of near Page Center, sisters Mrs. Emma Damman of near Page Center and Mrs. Minnie Buch of Clarinda, and many relatives and friends to mourn their loss.

Long obit from unknown paper, found in Obit files at Nodaway Valley Historical Museum:

Albert Bartels

The death of Mr. Albert Bartels came as a saddening surprise to even those who cared for him during his short illness. He had more or less trouble with appendicitis and had apparently recovered from an operation at the Hand hospital in Shenandoah, and was anticipating the reunion with his family at home, while being helped into the car, the hand of the Lord beckoned him to follow Him.
Tho a strong and vigorous young man, during his life, never-the-less like all mortals, when life's journey has come to an end, he had to desert life's highway.
Albert Heinrich Dietrich Bartels was born Arpil [sic] 21st, 1905. The following month, May 7th, he was baptized at the Immanuel Lutheran church. He was brought up to fear God and love His word. He received his christian training at home, in church, and in the Immanual School. He attended the confirmation instruction for two years, with a class of sixteen members, was confirmed, June 1st, 1919 by the pastor, the Rev. C. H. Jaebker.
He was married Feb. 23rd, 1917 to Miss Hattie Puvogel of Syracuse, Neb., to which union three children were born, one infant daughter preceding her father to the heavenly home; a son Clarence and a daughter, Dorothy, surviving.
Albert, since his marriage, has lived on the home place, three and a half miles west of the Immanual Lutheran church.

He passed away Thursday, Dec. 7th, at the age of 28 years, seven months, and 16 days. The immediate relatives left to mourn their loss, besides his bereaved wife, Hattie, and two children, Clarence and Dorothy, are his parents, Mr. Wm. Bartles and wife Dora nee Herzberg; two brothers, Herman of Greeley, Colo., and Walter of near Clarinda, two sisters, Mrs. Ed Buch and Mrs. George Dammann, both of near Clarinda.
A short service was held at the Wm. Bartels home in clarinda, at 2 o'clock, Sunday afternoon after which the body was taken to the Immanual Lutheran Church, where his pastor, the Rev. Wm. Mueller, addressed the relatives and many, many friends, who had assembled, on the comforting words of John, "I am the way, the truth and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me."
TheIm. [sic] School children with Mr. Burroughs at the pipe organ sang "Asleep in Jesus" and the congregation, "Why Should Sorrow Ever Grieve Me." Four young ladies, the Misses Minnie Busing, Esther Nothwehr, Elsie Herzberg and Nevada Herzberg, cousins of the deceased, carried the many beautiful flowers.
The remains were committed to rest at the Summitt cemetery. Pallbearers were his brother, Walter, brother-in-laws, Ed Buch and Geo. Dammann, Fred Stubbendick, Fred Hagermann and Fred Winters.
Those from a distance attending the funeral were the deceased's brother, Herman J. Bartels, of Greely [sic], Colo., his father-in-law, Mr. Henry Puvogel of Syracuse, Nebr., and his three brother-in-laws, Mr. Fred Stubbendick and family, Mr. Fred Hagermann and family, Mr. Wm. Kehlenbeck and family, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Bartels, Mrs. Willie Werner, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Dann and Ellis, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Meyers, Willie Kehlenbeck, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kehlenbeck, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Brammeier, Mr. and Mrs. Granaman, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Paap, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Borman, Carl and Violet Swanson and Mr. John Stubbendick, all of near Syracuse, Neb.
The deceased was a most loving father and husband, and none who made his acquaintance can but speak well of him, the sunshine which has radiated from his winning smile has ceased to radiate, it seems; but I cannot say and I will not say, that he is dead, he is just away, with a cheery smile and a wave of the hand, he has wandered into an unknown land, and left us dreaming, how very fair it must be, since he lingers there.
