Thurman Cheek, 73, died Friday, May 3, 1996, in a local residence. A longtime resident of Highlands, Cheek has lived in Palestine, Texas for the past 17 years. He was a member of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Baytown.

Thurman was preceded in death by his wife, Demmer Cheek, and is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Wayne Cowley of Highlands; daughters JoAnn Cheek and Dena Faye Cheek, both of Houston; grandchildren Kim Davis and Michelle Brantley, both of Highlands; and Doodle McKay and Dennis McKay, both of Huffman; great-grandchildren Jessica Cowley and Colton Brantley, both of Highlands; brothers Elmer Cheek of Palestine and Herman Cheek of Pineville, Louisiana; sisters Odell Allen of Clarks, La., Thelma Lacas of Rayville, La., Evelyn McDaniels of Oakgrove, La., Myrtis Clack of Rayville, La., Agnes Aldy of Batesville, Mississippi, and Helen Sue Bevill of Winnfield, Louisiana.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 1996, at Earthman Funeral Home.

Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, 1996, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Highlands with the Reverend John Zabelskas officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown. Pallbearers will be Dennis McKay, Eddie Howard, Charles Ripkowski, Charlie Newsom and Brent Newsom. Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Odom and Mr. Pope.
