Spencer Chamberlain is famous in Glover lore. In 1810, when the townspeople attempted to cut a channel between Long Pond and Mud Pond to better serve the mill below, a devastating flood ensued. Spencer ran down into Glover village to warn the townspeople. Long Pond became a dry pond, known as Runaway Pond. The bed of the pond is still observable today. The event has been memorized many times in history and poem. There is a commemorative monument on Rte. 16 in Glover.
