Asa moved with his father Samuel to Kentucky when he was only 5 years old.He married Rosanna Bean in 1825. Asa Shipley was a Cabinet maker and made coffins. Asa and Rose Anne had 9 children. Three of his sons served in the confederate army. Rose Anne died before 1880. She was living with her son, Jesse M. Shipley on the 1870 census. She was listed as 64 years old widow.
