Danish Royal Navy veteran
Svend Aasberg, 80, of Waverly and formerly of Hudson, died Sunday, May 27, 2012, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
He was born August 7, 1931 in Kvong, Denmark, the son of Stefan Marius Georg and Metha Kristena (Christensen) Aasberg. Before coming to the United States to live in 1957, he served in the Danish Royal Army.
Svend married Cleta L. Brown February 23, 1963 in Cedar Falls. She preceded him in death on January 24, 2002. He married Janet Marene Hoins April 25, 2009 in Waverly.
Svend was a machinist with John Deere, retiring in 1995. He was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Danish Brotherhood of America, and the Cedar Valley Danes.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Hoins, of Waverly; three sons, Ken (Anne) Buenzow, of Sherman, Texas, Bob (Julie) Buenzow, of Hamilton, Illinois, and Bill (Craig) Aasberg, of Kalona, Iowa; one daughter, Kristena (Chad) Aasberg Potratz, of Cedar Falls; three step daughters, Debbie (Jim) Matt, of Clermont, Iowa, Denise (Sam) Lasley, of Columbia, Missouri, and Deanna (Roger ) Arendt, of Silver Lake, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, and seven step great grandchildren; three brothers, Arne and Georg Aasberg, and Bent Hollander; two sisters, Edith Paolsen and Esther Vanborg, all of Denmark.
Svend was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Cleta, one brother Peder Aasberg, one half brother, Jens Hollander, one sister Karen Christensen, and his uncle Kristian P. Christensen.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2012 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls and one hour before services at the church on Monday.
