Anna was born in 25 January 1856 in Horsforth, Yorkshire, England. Horsforth is a large well-built village, where the manufacturing of Woollen Cloth is carried onto a great extent. Anna left her home in England for America arriving 21 December 1885 on the British ship "The Alaska." She makes her home in Galveston, Galveston, Texas with her brother John and his wife Anne J Goodall in 1886. She is listed as a seamstress for Mrs. S. C. Williams in the 1896 City Directory in Galveston. John, his wife and Anna find their way to Portland, Multnomah, Oregon where Anna meets Edward. They are married 3 September 1891 in Newport, Lincoln, Oregon. Edward is fifty-three and Anna is thirty-five.
Chitwood, Lincoln, Oregon

"Lincoln County is in the last West, and it is the best West." Lincoln County had much undeveloped land, and there was no better country in Oregon for a variety of industries, and where a man with little capital could easily make a home and produce a good income. The country wanted families and men who were willing to have an interest in developing its resources. Chitwood, Lincoln, Oregon was heavily wooded and not far from the Pacific Ocean. Life was hard for the first settlers like Edward as the land had to be cleared before crops could be planted. 7 This is where Edward and Anna decided to make their home. 8

Soon Edward found himself with an entirely new family with the birth of his first son Frank Bidwell Durkee, 3 December 1892 in Chitwood. Frank was named in honor of General John Bidwell, founder of Chico, Butte, California and presidential candidate that year of the Prohibition Party. Edward greatly admired John Bidwell. A warm letter of appreciation from the pen of John Bidwell was written in 1893 for making Edward's newly-born son the General's namesake. The General expressed in his letter to the proud father the feeling that the son would "grow up into a manhood of which his parents, as well as myself, will never have occasion to feel regret; on the contrary, will have in him good cause of pride and approbation." Bidwell's prediction proved in later years to be eminently correct. 9

Two more children were born to Edward and Anna. Wendell Phillips Durkee, Edwards second son was born 10 October 1895 and Edward last daughter was born on 2 February 1898 Saidee Frances Isabel Durkee.

Chico, Butte, California

The family lived in Chitwood until January 1903 when they moved to Chico, Butte, California, mostly because of the influence of John Bidwell. Edward had corresponded with John Bidwell many times over the years and he admired him greatly. Just after this move to Chico, Iva married George E McDonald 17 June 1903 in Philomath, Benton, Oregon. 10

What caused a rift between Edward and Anna is not known, but Edward obtained a divorce from her in Corvallis, Oregon in 1907. Edward returned to Oregon to live and Anna and their children remained in Chico. Later in 1907 at the age of sixty-nine Edward married for the fifth time to Augusta (Edwards) Behle age fifty-three. Augusta offered to make a home to Edward's children and this added the matter of custody to the previous disagreements. Edward always remained interested in his children and carried on an extensive correspondence with them.
