Anna left her home in England for America arriving 21 December 1885 on the British ship "The Alaska." She makes her home in Galveston, Galveston, Texas with her brother John and his wife Anne J Goodall in 1886. She is listed as a seamstress for Mrs. S. C. Williams in the 1896 City Directory in Galveston. John, his wife and Anna find their way to Portland, Multnomah, Oregon where Anna meets Edward. They are married 3 September 1891 in Newport, Lincoln, Oregon. Edward is fifty-three and Anna is thirty-five.

Frank was named in honor of General John Bidwell, founder of Chico, Butte, California and presidential candidate that year of the Prohibition Party. Edward greatly admired John Bidwell. A warm letter of appreciation from the pen of John Bidwell was written in 1893 for making Edward's newly-born son the General's namesake. The General expressed in his letter to the proud father the feeling that the son would "grow up into a manhood of which his parents, as well as myself, will never have occasion to feel regret; on the contrary, will have in him good cause of pride and approbation." Bidwell's prediction proved in later years to be eminently correct. 9

Edward returned to Oregon to live and Anna and their children remained in Chico. Later in 1907 at the age of sixty-nine Edward married for the fifth time to Augusta (Edwards) Behle age fifty-three. Augusta offered to make a home to Edward's children and this added the matter of custody to the previous disagreements. Edward always remained interested in his children and carried on an extensive correspondence with them.
