Granvel Boyd Kell, 88, of Castle Rock, died March 27, 2003, at home.

He was born Nov. 17, 1914, in Scaley, N.C., to Meade and Elizabeth (Miller) Kell. He moved to Cowlitz County in 1954.

Mr. Kell worked as a timber faller for various companies from 1954 to 1973, when he retired. At heart, he was always a farmer. He enjoyed growing a huge garden and shared his harvests with everyone.

At Mr. Kell's request, he will be buried in his bib overalls. He was known by many as "Grandpa Kell" and he enjoyed his children.

Survivors include two sons, Virgil Kell and Furman Kell of Castle Rock; five daughters, Alliefair Stiles of Lowell, N.C., Mary Grisham of Kelso, and Mozell Miller, Linda Gonzalez and Lillie Wood, all of Longview; four brothers, Donald Kell and Melford Kell of North Carolina and Walter Kell and Porter Kell of Longview; a sister, Fonsbi Chamblee of Longview; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Lee Kell, in 1995; two sons, Norman Kell and Lee Roy Kell; a brother, Albert Kell; and two sisters, Mozell Mason and Mary Terrel.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Steele Chapel, with the Rev. W.C. Thurman and the Rev. Larry Gee officiating. Interment will be at Longview Memorial Park. The viewing will be held from 12 to 7 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Steele Chapel.
