He served as assistant principal for five years and then as principal for 25 years. He spent 41 years serving in education. He served on the board of Six County Behavioral Health for several years and was a member of Rolling Plains United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Sharon S. Graves of the home; a son, Jon R. (Kari) Ankrum of Columbus; three daughters, Angela (Rey) Thompson of Columbus, Amy C. Ankrum of Columbus and Andrea (John) Reinhart of Findlay; two stepdaughters, Cheryl D. (Dan) Ditullio of Cincinnati and Karah E. Graves of Zanesville; a grandson, Daniel D. Ditullio; a sister, Imojean (George) Moorehead of Gratiot; and several nieces and nephews
