Ray Ausborne Whitener, 83, of Eighth Avenue, SE, died May 2, 2002, at N.C. Lutheran Home after a period of declining health.

Born Dec. 5, 1918, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Herbert A. and Edna Deitz Whitener.

A member of Faith Lutheran Church in Conover, he retired as a mechanical engineer with Ingold Co. after 48 years of service. He worked for Carolina
Mills for 10 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Stony Whitener; a daughter, Vivian W. Sigmon; two brothers, Worth Whitener and Charles Whitener; and a sister, Arleen Sellers. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Moretz Whitener; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald R. and Lynn Whitener of Hickory and Tony M. and Karen Whitener of Bethlehem; a son-in-law, Lewis F, Sigmon of Todd; a sister, Rachel W. Jordon of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted by Pastors Robert Shelby and Ronald Fink at 4 p.m. Sunday at his church.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post 48.

Pallbearers will be Rodney Sigmon, Shane Whitener, Cody Whitener, Zachary Whitener, Brad King and Patrick Miller.

Hickory Funeral Home, Hickory, is in charge of arrangements.
