Catharine was born in Clonmellon Catholic Parish, Meath Diocese, County Meath, Ireland to parents James Battersby and Honor Farmer Battersby.

Catharine was married to John Hassett 26 Jun 1835, Clonmellon Parish, County Westmeath, Ireland, and they had five children, Eleanor/Ellen, Honor, Mary, John Jr. and Catherine. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1849, though daughter Catherine died on the voyage. Daughter Honor, was baptized in Clonmellon Parish, County Westmeath, Ireland 1836. She did not emigrate with the family and no further information is known about her. The family lived in Brownstown, Co. Westmeath, Ireland prior to emigration.

John Hassett died Oct. 14, 1881 aged 75 years. Catharine, his wife died May 29, 1871 aged 71 years. May their souls rest in peace.
