Fred C. Mills, 85, of Bradford, died Friday, May 25, 2012 at UPMC Hamot, Erie.

He was born November 24, 1926 at his family's home in St. Elmo, IL. He was the youngest of four sons born to Nettie (Kline) and Frank Mills.

Fred, his parents, and siblings all worked to maintain the family farm throughout the Great Depression but formal education was also valued by the family. After graduating from high school, Fred joined the US Navy during World War II. [His drill instructor at Naval Station Great Lakes was renowned football coach Ara Parseghian.]

After leaving military service, Fred worked at various Kroger and Piggly Wiggly grocers in small towns in central Illinois, including Effingham and Pana. While working in Pana, he met Mary Pollman. Mary and Fred were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oconee, IL on October 26, 1950. Mary survives.

Fred and Mary soon moved to Assumption, IL where Fred sold Prudential insurance. He began working at Halliburton Co. in January 1956 at Flora, IL. He was transferred to Henderson, KY; Albion, MI; and Mt. Pleasant, MI before ultimately moving his family to Bradford, PA in January 1962. He retired from Halliburton in April 1988 after 32 years with the company.

Fred enjoyed traveling with Mary during their retirement and volunteering, especially at the Bradford Township Lion Club and many years with the Italian Festival. Fred was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church in Bradford, the Custer City Men's Club and the Fireside Pumpers.

In addition to his wife of sixty one years, Mary Mills, Bradford, he is also survived by his children, Michael Mills (Springfield, IL; partner Bob Holladay), Diane Mills (Lock Haven, PA), Steve Mills (Bradford, PA & Lafayette, LA; wife Sandy) and Judy DeLong (Atlantic Beach, NC), six granddaughters, Michelle Boullion (Lacombe, LA; husband Alan), Alyce Mills (Lafayette, LA), Meghann Bierly (Lock Haven, PA; husband Adam), Birgitta Polen (Milton, PA; husband Craig), Annika Johnson (Reading, PA; fiancé Michael Metzger), Jessica DeLong (Raleigh, NC), one grandson, Chett DeLong (Greenville, NC), four great grandchildren, Laura Leigh Boullion, Grant Boullion, Norah Bierly and Emory Bierly, two brothers, Francis M. Mills (Naples, FL; wife Donna), Leslie P. Mills (St. Elmo, IL; wife Mandy) many beloved sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and valued friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Edward Mills, one half-brother, Harold Mills, one half-sister, Janie Davis and one infant daughter, Melinda Mills.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at the Mascho Funeral Home, Inc. from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a memorial service immediately following with the Rev. Raymond Gramata, pastor of the St. Bernard Catholic Church officiating.

Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Oconee, IL.
