George was the brother of Andreas and Johann Frederich Lay. He was born in Oberschaffhausen, Baden Germany. After immigrating, he became an ice merchant, owning the business which started about 1874. He was apparently well off financially, owning a fair amount of furniture for the final house which he owned. His niece Katharina Lay worked for him as a servant. She is buried with George's brother Frederich Johann Lay.
