Johann Jakob Lay was born in Bischoffingen, Baden Germany. He immigrated with his parents Frederich Johann and Catharina (Grotz) and also with his brother George. He and his family were were members of the Carondelet Evangelical Church. He was a laborer and had jobs with the St. Louis Iron Mountain Railroad and Johnson Tin Foil. He never married. He died of Tuberculosis.
