Robert Owen Woolfolk was one of the children born to George Woolfolk and his wife Catherine Temple Tompkins "Kitty" Gwathmey. Robert was educated at Hanover College in Indiana and was a southern sympathizer during the Civil War, who ended up having to re-locate to Canada for a short time because he was so outspoken. He worked as a farmer in Paducah, Kentucky upon his return to the USA.

Robert was united in marriage on August 22, 1843 in Paducah, Kentucky to Mary Elizabeth Enders. Robert and Mary were blessed with the birth of at least ten children during their 31 year marriage:
