He was a farmer when, on August 21, 1862, he enlisted in the Volunteer Infantry at Vermilion County, Illinois, as a Private during the Civil War. He was wounded, disabled, and was discharged at Nashville, Tenn., on January 28, 1863, at the age of 45.
His wife, Mary Ann, passed away in 1865.
