Lawrence was born in Mason County, Kentucky, the son of Peter Dye and Abigail (Dye) Dye.

He was married to)Mary Ann VanTrease. Their children are Hiram, Martha, Elizabeth, Angeline, John, Mary and David. He lived briefly in South Carolina while dealing with some financial problems in Kentucky.

He was a farmer when, on August 21, 1862, he enlisted in the Volunteer Infantry at Vermilion County, Illinois, as a Private during the Civil War. He was wounded, disabled, and was discharged at Nashville, Tenn., on January 28, 1863, at the age of 45.

His wife, Mary Ann, passed away in 1865.

He married Delilah Mills. By that marriage, he was the father of fraternal twins, Cloyd and Ruvilla; Thomas Columbus, David, and Robert, who were all born after Lawrence was an elderly man.
