Catherine was born in Hoffnungstal, Hoffnungstal, Kherson, Russia, now part of Ukraine, to Andreas and Elizabeth [Schaffner] Bitz. She married in 1881, then immigrated with her husband's extended family in 1884, living for a few years in the Middle West before venturing on to the California gold fields.

Catherine died in 1948 at Yuba City, CA. The announcement from the Maryville Appeal newspaper reads: METZGER--Services were held Wednesday for Mrs. Catherine Metzger at the Ullrey Chapel. Rev. Truman Jolley of the First Presbyterian Church officiated. The songs "Nearer My Go To Thee" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" were sung and Mrs. Allison was the organist. Mrs. Metzger was a native of Germany [German-Russian] and had lived in the US for the past 63 years..."

She is remembered by her grandchildren as a soft spoken, lovely lady. Her stature was small, about five feet, chunky, with gray hair always neatly combed back into a bun. Her life had been a difficult one and she worked very hard. She had moved her family from one continent to another, across the total United States (3,000 miles), buying and selling and always starting over. But she never complained -- this is a sign of a true pioneer! But the German people have always had a good reputation for being industrious, thrifty and innovative.

These family recollections are the work of several Metzger relatives, including Donna Metzger.
