Leota Purdy Miller Fitzgerald, 91, of John Knox Village passed away on Dec. 21, 2007 at the John Knox Care Center.

Leota was born to Lee C. and Mary E. (Molly) Purdy on July 6, 1916 in Harris, Mo., where she remembered riding a pony to school. She married William M. Miller of Swartz Creek, Mich., on Christmas Eve in 1938 and resided there until his death in 1977.

She retired from General Motors in 1974. In 1980, Leota joined her elder siblings Virginia Owen and Joe Purdy as a resident of John Knox Village. Her eldest grandchild still remembers keeping Leota company on the long drive to Missouri when she moved.

While at John Knox, Leota was very active in the Calico Gals and the Lee's Summit United Methodist Church. She also attended the Village Church in John Knox Village. She was an active participant in various areas of service for the church and for John Knox Village.

Leota also volunteered with the Jackson County Election Board. In 1989 she married William Bryan Fitzgerald, another citizen of John Knox Village. They traveled extensively until his death in 1996.Survivors include her daughter, Sylvia (John) Forbes of Baldwin City, Kan.; William L. (Darlene) Miller of Swartz Creek, Mich.; foster daughter, Diana (Christopher) Meehl of Glendale, Ariz.; step-son, Gerald (Kay) Fitzgerald of Harrisonville, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at the John Knox Village Church in Lee's Summit.
