Webster Riley was born to Daniel S. and Lavinia C. Riley Balsinger on Feb. 8, 1866. His siblings were: Cyrus, Eva, Charles L., George and Daisie. Daniel died in 1874, leaving Lavinia with 6 children. Webster started working at 13 at the Edgar Thompson Steel Works in Braddock PA. He also worked at Homestead Steel Works, then Carnegie Steel Co. He became an Engineer of Ordnance, and assistant to the Vice President of Carnegie Steel. He made several trips to Europe negotiating contracts with governments for armor plates used in the construction of battleships. He was very active at Carnegie Steel and was on the Library Board that organized the Carnegie Library at Braddock, PA. He was involved with the sesqui-centennial celebration in Pittsburgh in 1908.
Webster married Katherine Lynn Martin in 1890 and they had 3 children: Margaret Gayle, Ellis Corey and William E.
He was very active at Carnegie Steel. He was on the Library Board that organized the Carnegie Library at Braddock PA, and involved with the Sesqui-centennial celebration for Pittsburgh in 1908. He was a member of several associations, and was a Mason at Lodge 679 in Pittsburgh. Webster died on Nov. 27, 1930.
