It is not known when Jean arrived in America.
He enlisted in the 7th U. S. Cavalry on 30 September 1873. He was a privAe in Company M during the battle of the Little Big Horn under Thomas French. He apparently went across the river as part of Marcus Reno's force to attack the indian village and was able to make the retreat back across and fought on what is now known as Reno Hill.

Prior to the entry to the 7th Cavalry he was a student.
