Mary Ann Dalton was born in the Marlboro District of South Carolina. She wed William Ellis Pledger and they moved to Texas in 1836 or 7 accompanied by their children and the Reverend Caleb Ives, the first Episcopal Minister in Texas who ministered Christ Episcopal Church founded in Matagorda, Texas in 1838. It is the oldest Episcopal church in Texas.

William Ellis Pledger farmed on land called to this day the "Pledger Plantation". William and Mary Ann both died in Matagorda, Mary in Pledger. After William's death Mary Ann purchased three hundred acres of land from Celia Shrock who had acquired it from colonist Lawrence Ramey on February 7, 1852. This tract was a part of the Stephen F. Austin grant of May 23, 1827 to colonist Ramey.

William and Mary Ann had daughters Narcissa Dalton, Ann Eliza and Desdemon two sons William and James. At the time of Mary Ann's death she was survived only by two daughters Narcissa and Mary Eliza.
