In 1871, James Barker, aged 3 months, was shown living in the home of his parents, Robert Barker, aged 44, and Hannah Barker, aged 38, in Eston, Yorkshire, England, with siblings, Joseph, 16, John W., 15, Mary, 11, Robert, 8, Frances, 7, Paul, 5, and Christiana Barker, aged 3. His father was shown to be a Deputy in an ironstone mine.
He came to America in June 1882 with his parents, returning to England after two years to attend school there. After graduation he returned to the United States. He settled in Wilkes Barre, Pa., with a sister, and worked in a coal mine for a while. He accepted a position with the Wilkes Barre Lace Curtain Company. He attended Wilkes Barre Business College and after graduation he accepted a position with the Patchogue-Plymouth Mills, where he worked for 54, retiring in 1949.
In 1930, James Barker, aged 59, was shown living on Rose Avenue, Patchogue, NY with his wife, Irene A. Baker, aged 55. James was shown to be a foreman at the lace mill.
On December 28, 1961, he celebrated his ninetieth birthday at his home, 73 Rose Avenue, Patchogue.
Obituary - James Barker, 90, of 73 Rose Avenue, Patchogue, died after an illness, October 12 at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.
Born in Eston, England, he lived in Patchogue for the past 66 years. He was a retired executive of the former Patchogue-Plymouth Mills. He had been retired since 1948.
He was a life member of the Southside Lodge, F & AM, of Patchogue. He received his 50 years citation from the grand chapter of the State of New York, Royal Arch Masons, for membership in Suwassett Chapter 195 of Patchogue. Mr. and Mrs. Baker celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary in November of last year.
He is survived by his wife, Irene A. of Patchogue; a brother, Arthur of Pennsylvania; a nephew, Ronald Barker of England and several nieces.
Masonic services were held at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Pettit Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Pettit Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stuart W. Van Cott, pastor of the Patchogue Congregational Church, officiating. Interment followed in the family plot in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Patchogue.
