The son of banker William Latham Abbott, Mr. Abbott was born in Pittsburgh and graduated from the Faculty of Art at Yale University in 1902 with a degree in art. In 1906 he formed a partnership with architect Benno Janssen. They were well known for their Beaux-Art works including the Athletic Club (1911), the Masonic Temple (1914), and the William Penn Hotel (1914-16). The partnership lasted until 1918.

In the 1920's Abbott was living in New York. In addition to being an architect, he occasionally contributed illustrations to newspapers and periodicals and designed settings for at least one Broadway play, "The Way Things Happen".
