MARTIN W. WINTERS is the son of JOHN JAMES WINTER and NANCY DANIELS WINTERS from the Burke County area of NC. They came to to Carter County Tennessee in the late 1820s and we believe that their son Martin was born there. Martin married NANCY HICKS about 1851. She was found living in her father's household in the 1850 census, so shortly after that Martin and Nancy were married. They had a long list of children from the census data from 1860, 1870 and 1880 BUT we only know of four that lived to adulthood.
Martin was a country preacher although I do not know if he had a church or if he earned much money as a Preacher, but we do know from the many signatures on marriage certificates, that he performed many marriages in NC and TN near the stateliness area. Those that knew him said he was a Baptist Preacher.
We believe that the 1870 Census data of Martin and Nancy's family is NOT reliable. The children we know they had are not listed in this census and children listed in this census, we cannot find anywhere in the genealogy record. This should be disregarded until further proof shows that any of these children are biological children. The birth dates for Martin and Nancy are also incorrect.
We believe the 1880 Census record for Martin and Nancy Winters is the accurate record. We believe that Nancy Hick Winters died about 1890.
In 1895, Martin Winters then married Sallie (Sarah) Hampton. They are found together in the 1900 Census record and they had been married for almost 6 years. We also found the marriage certificate that confirms Preacher Martin married Sallie Hampton in 1895. Sallie died before 1910 but we do not know the exact date of her death or location of her burial. We believe she is most likely in Taylor Chapel Cemetery on Buck Mountain, NC.
In the 1910 Census, Martin W. Winters, is found living with his grandson, William Martin Hayes and Will's wife, Anna Hayes and at the time they had three children. This record indicates that Will and Anna Hayes took care of Martin in his final years. Preacher Martin died in 1911.
Martin and Nancy Winters are buried on Buck Mountain on property that Martin once own. The property was owned by Martin's Great Grandson in the 1940s to 1980s. The surrounding property has since been sold but the cemetery tract was set aside on a special deed and is now called the "Hayes Orchard Cemetery" in Elk Park, NC and is owned by the descendants of Floyd Hayes, Martin's great grandson.
Our family is in the process of purchasing individual markers for each of the old graves of our ancestors in this cemetery. We will share them on this site when they are installed.
