Alma (preferred by her) was a twin, the daughter of Hiram A. Dean and Leona A. Gould, who married on Christmas Day, 25 Dec 1865 in Starke Co., Indiana. I found eight children for the couple, but there may have been others—Rosa V. (26 Sep 1868 – 26 Sep 1938), Charles (1868 – unknown), Jane (b. ca. 1875), Genetta “Nettie” A. (b. ca 1878), twins Martha Olive Alma (19 Apr 1883 – 18 Dec 1944) and Ernest (19 Apr 1883 – 2 Feb 1965), Hazel (3 May 1886 – 3 Jan 1904) and Mary (19 Oct 1891 – 1 Sep 1982).

I found Alma’s parents and older siblings on the 1870 Census, living in Oregon Township, Starke Co., Indiana. Hiram Dean, aged 24, was working for the railroad. Leona, aged 21, was home with Rosa, aged 3, and 2-year-old Charles.

The 1880 Census placed the family in Washington Township in Starke County. Hiram Dean, aged 24, was noted as “farmer, also works in saw mill”. Leona, aged 32, was keeping house. There with their parents were Rosa, aged 13, Charles, aged 12, Jane, aged 5, and 2-year-old Genetta. Also there was 59-year-old Susan Hagel.

Alma and twin brother Ernest were born three years after that census. They likely appeared with their parents and siblings on the 1890 Census. Unfortunately, there was a fire at the archives where the 1890 Census was being stored, and in the process of putting out the fire, the records suffered significant water damage, and the records were eventually destroyed.

Somewhere in those two decades, Alma’s mother Leona died and Alma’s father Hiram married Mary J. Puckett (nee VanAsdall) on 16 Oct 1898 in Starke Co., Indiana.

Two days after her father married, Alma followed suit, marrying first-husband Cornelius Zacharius Heminger on 18 Oct 1898. They had seven children together--Mary Ethel (23 Feb 1900 – 13 Jun 1973), Ora Marie (27 May 1903 – 12 Jun 1994), Charles J. (19 Sep 1905 – Aug 1968), Alta L. (30 Sep 1907 – 7 Oct 1992), Sarah Elizabeth (12 Feb 1911 – 27 Oct 1980), Lucy Idoris (26 Jul 1913 – 3 Sep 1982), and an infant son who was born and died between 1900 and 1910.

The 1900 Census placed the family in North Bend Township, Starke Co., Indiana. Cornelius (C.Z. on the record) Heminger, aged 29, was farming for a living. Alma, aged 18, reported that she had had one child, daughter Mary, aged 3 months.

By the 1910 Census, the family had relocated and was living in Culver, Union Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. Cornelius Heminger, aged 39, was working a new farm. Alma, aged 27, reported that she had had five children, but that only four had survived to that census. There with their parents were Mary, aged 10, Ora, aged 6, Charles, aged 4, and Alta, aged 2. Daughter Sarah would join the family a year later, followed by Lucy in 1913.

They were still in the Culver area when the 1920 Census was enumerated. Cornelius Heminger, aged 49, was busy with the farm. Alma, aged 37, was keeping house. Their six children were with them—Mary, aged 19, Ora, aged 16, Charles, aged 14, Alta, aged 12, Sarah, aged 8, and Lucy, aged 6. Also living with the family was Cornelius’ widowed father John Heminger, aged 77.

Just before the next census, Cornelius Heminger died on 10 May 1929, aged 58. Alma, widowed, aged 47, appeared without him on the 1930 Census. She wasn’t alone however. Daughter Sarah, aged 19, and her husband Wilford Crull, aged 20, were there, along with son Charles, aged 24, and Lucy, aged 16.

Two years after that census, Alma remarried, wedding Charles Tilton Stuck on 14 Oct 1932. They appeared together on the 1940 Census, living in Union Township in Marshall County. Charles Stuck, aged 63, was working on a sewer construction project. Alma, aged 56, was keeping house.

Four years after the ink was dry on that record, Alma died a week before Christmas on 18 Dec 1944, aged 61.
