Lewis was the son of Ardin and Eliza Jane (Lane) Prince Biggerstaff.  He married Melissa Albin on 14 Feb 1854 in White County, Illinois.  He served for the Union during the Civil War as a Private and Bugler in the 6th Illinois Cavalry, Co. H.  He spent the last several months of the war as a prisoner of war at Cahaba Prison in Alabama.
