He was born in Weatherford, Texas and lived his life in Texas. Besides being a golf pro, he spent a good part of his life designing and contracting the construction of golf courses throughout Texas. He also loved to fish and spent the 50's and 60's on the bank of a lake in Texas in a small trailer. His nephews and nieces considered him the 'eccentric' of the family, but they were always amused by him.
His best friends both on the golf course and in fishing boats were his nephew, Boone Yarbrough and the husband of his favorite niece, Jane, Leonard Bennett.

Floyd was a veteran of WWI.

He married Bess Ramsey in Texas but they separated fairly early in the marriage. They never sought a divorce and remained in friendly contact until his death in 1969.
