William was born in Indian Territory in Oklahoma, a full blood Choctaw. He was the son of Holmes and Harriet Duford McLish. He was a Captain in the British Army during the early stages of World War I. Later he returned to the American Army and fought alongside the French against the Germans in the trenches of France.
He retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sgt.
He married Stella Illian Smith and they had a son, Sherman McLish, born in Oklahoma on June 7, 1905 and died in Ada, Pontotoc, Oklahoma in June 1970.
