Born in Atlanta, GA, September 11, 1916, he was a son of the late Oscar D. and Esther Lyon Martin. He was retired from the payroll department of Abney Mills.
A member of First Presbyterian Church and the Men's Bible Class of the church, he also served as an Elder and Sunday School teacher in the Young Children's Dept. He worked with Boy Scout Troop #57, sponsored by the church, for approximately thirty-five years, twenty-five of which he served as Scoutmaster. During that time he was presented the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award for a volunteer leader, by the National Council of Boy Scouts of America.
Pepper was a charter member of Northwest Volunteer Fire Department where he was honored as "Fireman of the Year" in 1989. He served as the department's first treasurer and was a member of Northwest Volunteer Fire Department Quarter Century Club. He was also a charter member of the Greenwood County Firemen's Association serving as its first treasurer. He served on the Board of Directors of the first Greenwood County Parks and Recreation Commission and was a recipient of the Order of the Silver Crescent from the State of South Carolina. He was a member of American Legion Post #20 and was a former member of Greenwood Kiwanis and Golden K Clubs.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a son, Ted Martin and his wife, Helen of Greenwood; a grandson, Ted Martin, Jr. of Murrells Inlet; granddaughter, Ginny Martin Edwards and her husband, Nick of Greenwood; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Trey Martin of Murrells Inlet; a brother-in-law, Col. Marshall B. Bone, Sr. of Orlando, FL; a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Gene Martin and a sister, Eleta Martin Donelan of Columbia.
Memorial services will be conducted at 3 pm Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. David Mayo and Dr. George Wilson officiating.
A family burial with Fire Services Honors will be held in Greenwood Memorial Gardens prior to the service.
The family is at the home of Ginny and Nick Edwards, 108 Stratton Terrace in Kimbrook and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 Tuesday evening.
