In May 1909 - Benson was on his way home from school, he picked up a chunk of lime where he had been watching men mix mortar, and took it home, to try his hand at making mortar. He put the lime into a can and poured in some cold water to slake it. After several minutes, he happened to glance into the can and the lime exploded in his face and burned his eyes so badly that they decayed and had to be removed.

He was educated at the Ontario School for the Blind, Brantford, Brant County, Ontario.

He went on to Graduate in 1926 from the Chicago College of Osteopathy.

He married Charlotte Vickery on 27 JUL 1946.
