Ellen was the granddaughter of David E. Cress. Her mother was David's and Uree/Ury/Ura Williams Cress' daughter, Elizabeth Ann Cress. Elizabeth's and Uree's burial locations are currently unknown. Her maternal aunt is Eliza Catherine Cress Osborne.

After a long and painful illness Mrs. W.A. Brown died at her home on South Church street, at noon last Saturday, aged 67 years. Mrs. Brown was a kind, good woman and exceedingly industrious. She bore her illness with patience. She was a Christian lady, and had been a member of the Baptist church for the past 50 years. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 10:30 Sunday morning, being conducted by her pastor, Rev. W.W. Worley, assisted by Rev. A.E. Brown. After the service at the church the remains were conveyed to the old homestead north of the city for interment.
