Ellen is the great-granddaughter of Richard and Keziah Cole Williams.
After a long and painful illness Mrs. W.A. Brown died at her home on South Church street, at noon last Saturday, aged 67 years. Mrs. Brown was a kind, good woman and exceedingly industrious. She bore her illness with patience. She was a Christian lady, and had been a member of the Baptist church for the past 50 years. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 10:30 Sunday morning, being conducted by her pastor, Rev. W.W. Worley, assisted by Rev. A.E. Brown. After the service at the church the remains were conveyed to the old homestead north of the city for interment.

Ellen is listed with her mother in the 1860 Federal census for Johnson County, Tennesse, with her mother, Elizabeth, living in Elizabeth's mother's home. She was Elizabeth's only child. She is next found in the 1870 census living in the Rockcastle County, Kentucky home of her second cousin, Derrill Mitchell Cress. Ellen married William A. Brown on 23 December 1875 in Solitude, Ashe County, North Carolina. Ellen's father is currently unknown.
She is a descendant of Jamestown colonist/Mayflower passenger Stephen Hopkins through her maternal grandmother.
