James J Williams was born in Ellisburg, Jefferson, NY to Francis L. and Lucy E. (Brown) Williams. On May 07, 1861 he enlisted at Mansville, NY into 24th NY Infantry, Company K as Private. Fought in both battles of Bull Run/Manassas being injured twice. He reportedly lay on the battlefield for 24 hours with the second battle before he could be moved for medical treatment. Discharged from hospital in Philadelphia, PA March 20, 1863. On December 02, 1863 James reenlisted again as Private at New York City into 16th NY Heavy Artillery, Company E along with his father, Francis Williams. Mustered out at Washington DC on August 21, 1865.
Relocated to Sherman, Crawford, Kansas by 1870 census and is found living with sister and brother-in-law, Ellen (Bill) Gallea. Relocating to Cedar Vale, Chautauqua, KS later.
Married Caroline "Carrie" Taylor on July 16, 1892 in Winfield, Cowley, Kansas. Relocated to Stroud, Oklahoma shortly thereafter. Farming in summer months and helping brother-in-law, Melvin Taylor haul freight across Oklahoma. Had two daughters, Frances Williams Youker and Dulcie Williams Lutman.
James died in Stroud on December 12, 1899.
After his death, widow Carrie and children relocated to Grand Traverse County, Michigan.
