and Great Granddaughter of George Steele.


This information has been excerpted from The Descendants of Philip Steele (1758-1827) and his wife Susannah Ochs (1767-1854) compiled by Patricia K. Johnson in 1998. This publication shows her birth as May, 1820. Her Steele lineage is Elizabeth Steele, Philip and Palatinate immigrant George.

According to the 1909 William Welfley book, (page 162) she and her family were the only ones who remained in Somerset Co., PA. , and she married Jacob Welfley in May 1838. Jacob was born May 4, 1816 and died February 10, 1849. The children of Elizabeth Arnold and Jacob Welfley are:

William Henry Welfley, born August 14, 1840 in Somerset Co., PA and died August 1920 in Somerset Co., PA. (An article was published on William Welfley in The Laurel Messenger (publication of the Historical and Genealogy Society of Somerset County PA) volume 26 number 4, November 1985 page 185-188 "Footprints in Somerset History". William's father, Jacob Welfley died before William was nine years old. Elizabeth Nelson Simpkins. They had three children. In 1860, he learned photography, a profession he followed for many years. William received the nickname of "Julius" during his visiting Civil War troops.

William served nineteen terms as Burgess of Somerset starting in 1875. At the age of 42, William became deaf from scarlet fever. Because of that infliction, writing became his main source of communication. He was a noted historian of Somerset County and collected newspaper clippings, files, letters and books pertaining to the county and community. In 1906 he completed the three volume "History of Bedford and Somerset Counties Pennsylvania". In 1909 he completed the Steele family genealogy "A Genealogy of the Descendants of George Steele and his Wife Margaret". William never married and therefore state he had no close family ties. In 1914 his health began to decline and he entered Bowman Hospital. His death was announced with a front page story in the Somerset Herald on August 4, 1920. He is buried in Union Cemetery, but it is currently unknown which Union Cemetery.

On page 163 of Welfley's "A Genealogy of the Descendants of George Steele and his Wife Margaret" two other children, Simon and Ann Eliza along with Jacob died in infancy.
A second marriage was contracted with Nelson Simpkins, April 21, 1851. Welfley book, page 162.

Children from that marriage are:

Kearney W. Simpkins, born April 22, 1852.
Steward Simpkins, born August 15, 1855.
Peter Simpkins, born December, 1857 and died 1861.
