Obituary

Connie N. Harnum, 68, of Selinsgrove, entered into rest with her Lord on Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born July 20, 1942, at home in Oriental, a daughter of Orpha (Snyder) Nipple, of Meiserville, and the late Raymond Nipple. In 1988, she married Donald J. Harnum, who survives.

She was a 1960 graduate of Middleburg High School and received her bachelor's degree from East Stroudsburg University and her master's degree from Western Maryland College (McDaniel).

Connie was an assistant professor of physical education emeritus at Susquehanna University where she taught and coached women's tennis and field hockey for more than a 29-year career. Prior to joining the faculty at Susquehanna University in 1974, she taught and coached at Greencastle, Middleburg and Shikellamy high schools.

Known as a caring and positive coach, Connie's tennis teams at Susquehanna included both team and individual champions more than 17 years. Her 29 years as field hockey coach were successful in conference play and highlighted in her final season with a Susquehanna University record 15 wins and selection to the NCAA tournament. Always a professional as a coach, she was especially proud of her close relationships with many of her student-athletes. While at Susquehanna, she also served as assistant marshall to the faculty for 13 years.

Raised in Leininger's Lutheran Church in Oriental, she was an active member at Sharon Lutheran Church, Selinsgrove, where she was a member of the chorus and performed as a soloist. She was a volunteer at Haven Ministries, a visitor in the Prisoner Visitation and Support program, and a "Big Sister" to her "little" Chrystal for seven years, in whom she took great pride.

A woman of many talents, Connie was raised on a farm in Oriental where she developed her skills in piano, singing, sewing, canning and cooking. She took great joy in playing golf and tennis, cross-country skiing, gardening, decorating and entertaining. Traveling was also a great joy later in life, especially in Europe, with her husband and their travel group of close friends. She was fond of her relationships at Bucknell Golf Club and her book club.

Known best for her positive and generous spirit, she was a wonderful example of courage and faith during her long illness.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her beloved son, Matthew Delbaugh, one sister and brother-in-law, Anna Mary and Harold Meiser, and one brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Connie Nipple. She took great joy in her close relationships with her nieces and step-grandchildren, and the four adult children of her husband, Don.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sharon Lutheran Church, Market Street, Selinsgrove, with the Rev. Robert P. Doll, officiating. A reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted at Susquehanna University for the Field Hockey program, or to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Central Susquehanna Valley, 1070 Market St., Sunbury, PA 17801.
