From the Swan-Law Funeral Directors ~

Shirley Ayer, age 84, passed away Thursday, May 10th, 2012 at a local hospital
in the company of her entire family.

Shirley was born on June 17, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri to Howard and Johanna Smith. At the age of two, her father, an employee of the Santa Fe Railroads Fred Harvey system was transferred to Albuquerque, New Mexico. After 3 years there her family moved to Manitou Springs, where she lived until getting married.

Shirley graduated from Manitou HS in 1945 and then went on to Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina and graduated in 1950. Upon returning to Colorado she worked for the phone company until getting married in 1956.

The day we were married was Shirley's first lesson in becoming a country girl. I was an hour late to the church and when she asked me why, I told her we were branding and castrating calves and lost track of time. Being a city girl she asked why that was so important so I quickly explained that I was operating on borrowed money and those calves were going to pay for the honeymoon. That brought on her famous smile and she said "I understand now so lets get on with the program." Ever since that day she has promoted eating more beef. Being the lover of her Lord that she has always been, I'm sure she is up there telling how she managed and helped hold on to the land that has been in our family for 142 years.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Dick Ayer; her Children, Michael Ayer of Black Forest, Susan (Bob) Gordon of Black Forest and Patrick (Crystal) Ayer of Colorado Springs; Grandchildren, Luke (Rian) Taylor, Kelley (Andrew) Baca and Emma Ayer; Great Grandchildren, Zoe, Kavyn, Brenley, Jaxon, Logan and Remy; Nieces, Charlotte Moore and Linda Hartman; Special friends, Lois Cooper, Eileen Dillinder, Fern Hammer, and Martha Kanagy, Manitou HS classmates, 1945; Kathy Bennett, Shirley Gross and Jo Tuttle, Bob Jones University classmates, 1950; Evelyn Gotschall Ness - Beautician & Confidant for 40+ years.
