Mary Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Joel Smith and Isabella Marshall Smith, was born at Stony Point, Nov 2, 1829 and died Aug 8, 1855, six months after the death of her father. She married James Monroe Perrin on Jan 30, 1849. The Rev John McLees who performed the ceremony noted in his diary that it was “attended by a large company.” James Monroe Perrin was a brother of Col T C Perrin, President of the Greenville and Columbia Railroad and prominent Lawyer in Abbeville. Col Perrin was Captain of the first company which went into Confederate service from Abbeville County, going to Charleston to take part in the siege of Fort Sumter. The members of the company had enlisted for a short time only but when the real war became certain Capt Perrin organized another company which became part of Orr’s Regiment, known as Co B, of this Regiment, and went into active service in Virginia. Col Perrin was mortally wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia May 3, 1863 and died the following morning.
