David was fine brick mason and belonged to the Masonic Fraturnity. David placed his Masonic order above all else. At one time a man Morgan dissappeared ( who had tried to expose the Masonic Order ) and three men including David was arrested and placed in jail for several months, but with no evidence the three men were turned loose. During these months of jail each week an envelope of money with a note telling Sarah not to worry that her husband as well as her and her children would be cared for appeared under the door of David's home. On file in the Surrogate's Court of Syracuse,NY the petition of Archibald P Thompson, sworn to March 29 1842. This recites as follows: David J. Abbott, an inhabitant of the Town of Marcellus, Onon County, NY came to his death by drowning on August 18 1839, leaving Sarah Abbott, his widow, and Ruth Ann, Rebeccah Jane, James Abbott and two boys whose name is unknown to petitioner, his only next of kin, etc. etc. Letters of administration on the estate of David J Abbott were issued to Sarah Abbott and Archibald P Thompson on March 29 1842. Recorded in book bb 161. The minute of the court granting the letters of is recorded in book bb of Miscellaneous orders at page 190. (Note) The two boys not named were George Andrew Abbott, father of Daniel T Abbott. and the other one was Franklin Cook Abbott. Family notes indicate that David drowned trying to save two young boys. Apparently, one old biddy commented that " he'd not drowned if he'd been in church with his wife where he should have been!".
