Jack L. Larrimore, a former Howard County police chief and law enforcement consultant, died of cancer Wednesday at Memorial Hospital in Easton. He was 73.
He was Howard County's police chief from 1963 to 1969, when he ran as a Republican for county executive in Howard's first election under charter government. He lost to Democrat Omar J. Jones, a high school principal who did not reappoint Mr. Larrimore as police chief.
From 1969 to 1972, he was a management consultant to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, then was chief of the legal division of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center of the U.S. Department of the Treasury in Glynco, Ga., until his retirement in 1985.
Born in St. Michaels and raised in Baltimore, he was a 1941 graduate of Polytechnic Institute and enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He served as an air-to-air gunnery instructor at Pearl Harbor.
He began his nearly 40-year law enforcement career in 1947 as a state trooper before entering Western Maryland College in 1948.
While studying for a bachelor's degree, he was a member of the Baltimore police vice squad in 1951 and later was a part-time officer for the Laurel force. He subsequently joined the force full time and became chief in 1955.
He took night classes to earn a law degree from the University of Baltimore in 1956 and left the Laurel position to become a police adviser to South Korea and Thailand for the U.S. State Department.
He lived in St. Michaels, where he was a docent at the maritime museum. He was a book collector, raised Chesapeake Bay retrievers and was a member of the American Chesapeake Club.
A memorial gathering was held yesterday at the St. Michaels home of his special friend, Carol Vanorsdale.
Mr. Larrimore, who was divorced, is survived by his son, Judson K. Larrimore of Westminster; two grandsons; and another close friend, Anthony Walton of Glenelg.
