PORTLANDER REACHES 100, RECALLS NOME GOLD BOOM - Anna Thurlow, who was 100 years old Sunday, remembers the West when it was wild and woolly. Miss Thurlow was a seamstress in Nome, Alaska, during the gold rush days. She came to Portland in the 1890's with two of her brothers and she has lived here ever since. She was born in Olive, Ohio. Still in good health and only slowed down a little by a broken hip a few years ago, Miss Thurlow still is active. Mrs. Alma Briggs, with whom Miss Thurlow lives at 2425 NW Johnson St., says Miss Thurlow reads, writes, and does some sewing. She also makes her bed every day and dresses herself. Until she was 90, Miss Thurlow lived by herself. For many years she operated her own dress-making business in Portland. Miss Thurlow's only relatives in Portland are a niece and a nephew, Mrs. Edward Evans, 823 SE 54th Ave., and William S. Thurlow, 17623 SE River Rd. To celebrate her 100th birthday, Miss Thurlow shared a birthday cake with her friends.
